Special Four Winds program TUESDAY 5/29 2:45 PM at WS
You may recall that 5 years ago, Lisa Purcell from the Four Winds Nature Institute came to the school to introduce us to the nature program. She inspired us, led us through a short activity so we'd get a taste of how it works, and answered our questions.
Well, five years later it's time for a reprise! This time, our presenter will be Dana Hudson. She is a powerhouse educator and Four Winds board member. Dana started the Farm to Institution program in Vermont, and was the Northeast Regional leader of the national Farm to School network.
In the past 5 years, Weathersfield students have experienced all 5 years' of the Four Winds curriculum -- 5 themes, 40 topics in total, with no repeats. Next year we will start back with the "Earth" theme again, and next year's 5th graders will revisit the same theme they learned in kindergarten, but with the "upper grades challenge" activities to build upon the seeds we planted in kindergarten.
In these past 5 years, educational practice has advanced and Next Generation Science Standards have been adopted. The Four Winds curriculum is not stagnant. Four Winds educators have kept pace, revising and updating not only program materials but (especially) strategies for emphasizing student inquiry. We'll hear a little about that at next Tuesday's gathering, and teachers (and any of us) will have a chance to ask questions.
PLEASE -- we hope you will attend (even if you are already a committed volunteer or teacher already familiar with the program) AND bring a friend! We need about 4 more volunteers to solidify the volunteer corps for next year. And it will be useful for teachers to hear how the program is evolving and get some ideas for ways it can help address the standards you are teaching. We promise to have you out the door by 3:45!
If you can't come but would like to be on next year's volunteer list, and/or would like more information about potentially volunteering, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me.
