Beginning on Friday, February 16, 2018, K-6 students will be setting reading goals for how many minutes they will be able to read over the next 6 weeks. Upon setting these goals, they will be gathering pledges from family and friends in order to reach a Windsor School Read to Feed Team goal of $3000 by March 30th, on behalf of Heifer International.
This reading incentive fundraiser is being supported by the 5th and 6th grade student council and it is designed to highlight the needs of others around the world while increasing literacy practices at our school. Pledge money and donations will be collected to directly benefit families in need by sending 100% of the fundraising money to Heifer International Read to Feed program to purchase animals that will benefit the families in their native countries. The money goes to purchase animals such as flocks of chickens, water buffaloes, and even llamas. Students will get the opportunity to vote as a school team on what they would like to purchase from the Windsor School Team at the end of April.
This fundraiser focuses on bringing awareness while encouraging literacy at school and at home. In addition, during the month of March, the Read Across America program begins with a focus on “Building A Nation of Diverse Readers” and it will work in collaboration with the K-6 upcoming Project Based Learning project(PBL). This PBL presentation, with the essential question of, “how can we honor and celebrate diversity through the arts?”, will help students make connections to those in their home community and around the world.
To begin the celebration of learning and diversity, the Windsor School Read to Feed Team students are encouraged to read independently and with others, or they can also be read to and they will keep a time log. Opportunities for additional lessons with a focus on Heifer International and a chance for cross-grade reading buddies are possible. In addition, Mystery Readers in the form of administration, staff, other K-12 teachers, and willing students, will be visiting K-6 classrooms during the month of March to surprise the elementary classes with a special story.
Throughout the course of the next six weeks, please be on the lookout for Windsor School Read to Feed team students in order to make a pledge to their literacy and to Heifer International. As a school, we are hopeful that we can raise $3,000, which has the chance to be doubled during the Spring Challenge at Heifer International. If you want to donate directly, please visit our Windsor School Read to Feed Team website to support our goal. Windsor School Read to Feed Team. Other donations can be shared with checks made payable to Heifer International. Pledge donations will be collected by students between March 30th and April 13th. Thank you for all of the support in advance.
