Fresh Fruits and Veggies Program Grant

Weathersfield School was awarded $12,300.00 for this school year by the FFVP grant program, so we can purchase fresh fruits and veggies to give to the children each day.  The program starts on Monday, October 2, 2017, and we are so happy about it!  We have called local farmers to see what fruits and veggies we can buy from them.  We are also planning to work with Upper Valley Produce to buy from them, as well.  If you know of anyone who would like to sell us cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, or any other yummy items, please call the school at 674-5400.

The grant stipulations include the following:

-Giving fresh fruits and veggies to all adults in the building at the same time the students get their treats, so adults can be can be good role models for healthy eating

-Each morning, we will announce the delicious treat of the day and share an important or nutritious fact about the fruit/vegetable

-Each class will send one class member down to the kitchen at the start of 7th period to retrieve their snack for the class, (don't forget to get treats for the Band/Chorus students, too)

-We are encouraging teachers to tie the fruit/vegetable of the day to their curricula; be sure to send us news of any projects or extended learning activities based on the FFVP treats

-We plan to create a monthly calendar that announces the snack and serving size provided each day

-Feature monthly taste testing as part of the lunch period

-A monthly Star fruit or vegetable will be featured in the Principal's newsletter, along with nutritional facts and recipes to try

We would love to hear your suggestions for various fruits and veggies we should try, as we will be ordering weekly.  Give us a call or shoot us an email as we love to incorporate your ideas when and where we can.
