On Friday, June 9, 2017, students from Mrs. Westgate's sixth grade social studies class shared their understanding of ancient civilizations at the 3rd annual Ancient Civilization Museum at Windsor Schools.
Students shared their work in group presentation style as visitors from Kindergarten through sixth grade came to ask students questions and to hear about ancient civilizations like, Rome, Greece, China, Mesopotamia, Mayan, and Aztec. Maps reflecting geographic features and crop locations were featured along with artifact replicas such as board games, coins, armor, and jewelry. Dumplings were made by students and shared with visitors by student presenters William and Hunter who shared their knowledge of ancient China. Considering the Aztec culture came up with the concept of popcorn, Jack, the presenter for this civilization, shared popcorn with his visitors.
Each student also wrote letters on hand drawn postcards from the perspective of time travelers that answered 3 key questions regarding the location of the civilization pertaining to geography and crops, a cultural tradition, and a comparison of the time period they studied to something from today.
