The 7th Grade Social Studies students completed a unit of study treating World War II. As war, death, and destruction were the most explored and discussed topics, we felt it would be fitting to end the war unit with a focus on peace. The students read the story of Sadako Sasaki, a 12 year old girl. She died of radiation induced leukemia in 1955, ten years after the bomb had fallen near her home in Hiroshima. Her story inspired the students of Windsor Middle School to learn the art of Origami and fold 1,000 Paper Cranes for Peace.
We would like to acknowledge Mrs. Christie Keeney and Mr. Joel Engwal for their generosity of time and skill as they joined the social studies students during this study and provided personalized instruction to each 7th grader as they created 1,028 paper cranes, each complete with a child’s wish of joy, peace, and happiness.
