This year, State Street School is offering students the opportunity to enhance their learning during skills block. In Mrs. Westgate's 5th and 6th grade class, students have started a group called S.O.S. or Support Our Soldiers. They designed this group to gather donations and raise money to send care packages to the American troops overseas. Students created and presented a slideshow of information at the February 10th K-6th assembly to explain to State Street Students how they can participate in this service learning project. Based on numerous sources, our U.S. troops are stationed in over 100 countries world wide. The students want to be able to offer them little comforts from home that we can include in care packages. Some of the items students can bring in include, but are not limited to, toiletries, snacks, water flavoring packets, baby wipes, and letters from community members to thank the soldiers for their service. Monetary donations to buy items to include in the packages and to pay for the shipping and handling. As the collection continues through the end of April, we will be looking to make connections with local Windsor veterans and military families to help us put the care packages together. In addition, we are hoping to find a few units that might include some local heroes to send the care packages to. If anyone has contact information of soldiers in deployment, we would love the information. In the meantime, if you would like to donate, please bring your donation to State Street School.
